100-level OAU student dies after falling into a soakaway

Friends and family are mourning the demise of a 100-level student of the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun state, who died after accidentally falling into a septic tank in her hostel on Wednesday, February 9, 2022.

The Department of Linguistics and African Studies student identified as Heritage Ajibola was said to be packing the clothes she had washed earlier when she suddenly slipped into the septic tank in the hostel that allegedly cost as much as N200,000 for a bed space.

Her death was confirmed by the University's Students’ Union president, Ogunperi Taofeek Olalekan, who blamed the hostel management for the incident, saying it was avoidable if the soakaway system was properly constructed and covered.

It was also gathered that the vice-chancellor of the school visited the scene of the incident and promised to ensure that necessary actions are taken.
