ABSU issues rebuttal to 'Stranded Law Students' report

The management of Abia State University (ABSU), Uturu, has strongly refuted claims made in a recent online publication regarding its Law graduates awaiting mobilization for the Nigerian Law School. The university labeled the article, captioned "STRANDED ABSU Law students cry out after four years," published by Daily Post online on December 4, 2025, as containing "distorted information."

The rebuttal, released by the school's Deputy Registrar and Public Relations Officer, Chijioke Nwogu, addresses the core issues raised in the initial report:

National Issue of Backlog: ABSU insists that the issue of a backlog of Law graduates awaiting Law School admission is a "national issue and is not peculiar to ABSU."

Merit-Based Admissions: Admission into the Nigerian Law School is described as "competitive and based on merit." The university explains that due to limited space and quota, prospective candidates with relatively high CGPAs are prioritized for Law School placement.

Resolving the Inherited Problem: The current university administration acknowledges that it "inherited a backlog" of students and is actively working to resolve the problem. The strategy involves sending a "certain percentage of candidates in each set" to Law School, with a slight preference given to the set whose turn it is.

False Allegations on Figures and Plans: ABSU explicitly denies that the figure quoted for the existing backlog is accurate, stating it is "bloated." Furthermore, the university dismisses the allegation of a "fresh plan by ABSU to compile only the names of the 2025 graduating set" as false.

The university authorities stressed their commitment to clearing the inherited backlog "as soon as possible."

The statement also included an appeal to stakeholders:

"Parents, Guardians and our Students are advised to exercise patience and be properly guided."

The administration also took a moment to address journalistic ethics, stating that "Prudent journalism entailes gathering accurate and verified information before publication."

The Governing authorities of Abia State University Uturu confirm they are "working assiduously" on the matter.
