AKSU secures NUC's approval for new medical and science programmes

Akwa Ibom State University (AKSU) has received official approval from the National Universities Commission (NUC) to commence new academic programmes in Basic Medical, Health, and Physical Sciences, starting from the 2023/2024 academic session.

In a press release signed by the University Registrar, the institution announced the introduction of six new degree programmes designed to address critical needs and evolving trends in the health and science sectors. The newly approved programmes are:

1. B.NSc Nursing Science

2. B.PH Public Health

3. B.EnvHSc Environmental Health Science

4. B.MLS Medical Laboratory Science

5. B.HT Health Technology

6. B.SLT Science Laboratory Technology

The university stated that these programmes are “globally relevant, highly marketable, and align with our commitment to expanding access to quality tertiary education and mounting cutting-edge programmes that will prepare the next generation for sustainable impact.”

A notable highlight is the Science Laboratory Technology (SLT) programme, which offers students the unique opportunity to specialize in one of eight distinct technology options:

· Biology Technology Option – Focus on biological systems, zoology, botany, and applied life sciences.

· Biochemistry Technology Option – Emphasis on biochemical processes, molecular biology, and applications in food, pharmaceutical, and medical sciences.

· Chemistry Technology Option – Training in laboratory analysis, organic, inorganic, and physical chemistry with industrial applications.

· Chemical/Petrochemical Technology Option – Studies in chemical engineering principles, petroleum exploration, and refining processes.

· Geology/Mining Technology Option – Covers earth sciences, mineral exploration, mining techniques, and environmental geology.

· Microbiology/Biotechnology Option – Focus on microbial sciences, biotechnology innovations, and applications in health, agriculture, and industry.

· Physical/Electronics Technology Option – Specialization in applied physics, instrumentation, and electronics for scientific and industrial use.

· Physiology/Pharmacology Technology Option – Provides knowledge of human physiology, pharmacological principles, and biomedical laboratory techniques.

The approval marks a significant expansion of AKSU’s academic portfolio and is expected to enhance the training of professionals in high-demand scientific and medical fields.

Prospective candidates are hereby notified that applications for admission into these newly approved programmes are now open for the 2023/2024 academic session.
