The University of Port-harcourt (UNIPORT) invites applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for admission into the following Programmes:
A. FACULTY OF HUMANITIES
All Humanities Ph.D Programmes require a minimum CGPA of 3.50 on a 5- point scale. In addition, to be found admissible, candidates must score a minimum of 60% in the admission interview.
1. COMPARATIVE LITERATURE PROGRAMME
M.A. Comparative Literature
Ph.D Comparative Literature
Requirements for MA Comparative Literature Programme:
Candidates must possess at least a Second Class Honours Degree (Lower Division) or its equivalent in Literature from a recognized University. Graduates in English have to produce evidence of a minimum of two years (four semesters) academic exposure to French or another language of International communication.
African Language
There is a Special African Language requirement for the Comparative Literature Programme. Any candidate who is deficient in speaking, reading or writing an African language will be required to take an appropriate course in the Department of Linguistics and Communication Studies and produce evidence of having passed that course.
Requirements for Ph.D Comparative Literature Programme:
Candidates must have an M.A. Degree in Literature or M.A. Degree in other related discipline in addition to the other Faculty Requirements.
2. DEPARTMENT OF THEATRE ARTS
Postgraduate Diploma (PGD), Master of Arts (MA) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D)
(i) Postgraduate Diploma (PGD) in Theatre & Media Arts
Admission Requirements for PGD Programme in Theatre & Media Arts
To qualify for admission into the Postgraduate Diploma programme, a candidate must obtain a first Degree in the disciplines within the Humanities or a first Degree from any other discipline.

Candidates must have an M.A. Degree in Foreign Languages and Literatures in addition to the other Faculty Requirements.
5. DEPARTMENT OF HISTORY AND DIPLOMATIC STUDIES
(i) Postgraduate Diploma in History & Diplomatic Studies (PGDHDS)
Qualifications for Admission
To be eligible for admission into Postgraduate Diploma Programme in History and Diplomacy, a candidate must have a good honours Degree not less than Third Class and a CGPA of not less than 1.50 and above in the Humanities, Social Sciences, Education, Law and the Management Sciences.
(ii) Master of Arts (M.A.) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) in the following areas:
(a) Social & Political History
(b) Economic History
(c) Diplomatic & International Studies
Qualifications for Admission into the Masters Programme
To qualify for admission into the M.A Degree Programmes of the Department, candidates must possess at least a Second Class Honours Degree (Lower Division) or its equivalent of the University of Port Harcourt or from any other recognized University in the relevant subjects.
Except for Archaeology/Cultural Heritage Management, candidates from non-History backgrounds will be required to pass through the Department’s Postgraduate Diploma Programme in History and Diplomacy before admission into the MA programmes.
(iii) Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) programme
Qualifications for Admission into the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) Programme
To be eligible for admission into the Doctor of Philosophy programme in History and Diplomatic Studies, a candidate must have an MA/M.Sc Degree with a CGPA of 3.50 and above on a 5-point scale in History from any Nigerian University or abroad. Except for Archaeology, candidates from non-History backgrounds are expected to pass through the Department’s Postgraduate Diploma Programme in History and Diplomatic Studies to be admitted into Ph.D Degree programmes. In addition, candidates will be required to present a written proposal on a thesis topic in their chosen field and score a minimum of 60% in pre-admission oral interview.
6. DEPARTMENT OF LINGUISTICS AND LANGUAGE ARTS
(i) Postgraduate Diploma (PGD) in Linguistics

Requirements for Postgraduate Diploma in Linguistics:
To be eligible for admission into the programme, a candidate must have a good honours Degree in any field from any recognized University. Candidates with HND Upper Credit are also eligible for admission into the PGD Programme. Candidates with pass Degree will not be admitted.
Requirements for M.A. Linguistics and Language Arts
Candidates wishing to enroll in the Linguistics component must hold at least a Second Class Honours Degree (Lower Division) or a Lower Credit with a CGPA of 3.50 on a 5-point scale in Postgraduate Diploma in Mass Communication, Communication Studies/Arts. Candidates wishing to enroll in the Linguistics component must possess the same qualifications in Linguistics or a subject with a strong linguistic component.
Requirements for Ph.D Linguistics and Language Arts
Candidates wishing to enroll in the Communication component must hold at least a Master’s Degree with a CGPA of at least 3.50 on a 5-point scale in Mass Communication, Communication Studies/Arts. Candidates wishing to enroll in the Linguistics component must possess the same qualifications in Linguistics or a subject with a strong linguistic component.

Requirements for Ph.D Philosophy
Candidates must have a Master’s Degree in Philosophy with a CGPA of at least 3.50 or its equivalent in addition to the other faculty requirements.

Requirements for MA in Religious and Cultural Studies:
Admission to the MA programme will be open to candidates with the B.A. Degree in Religious and Cultural Studies, Islamic Studies, Theology or other related disciplines such as Philosophy, History, Sociology and Anthropology with a Second Class Honours Degree (Lower Division), from the University of Port Harcourt or any other institution recognized by the Senate of the University of Port Harcourt
Requirements for Ph.D Religious and Cultural Studies:
Candidates must have an M.A. Degree in Religious and Cultural Studies in addition to the other faculty requirements.

Candidates must possess at least a Second Class Honours Degree (Lower Division) in Fine Arts or its equivalent from a recognized University.
Requirements for Ph.D Fine Arts
Candidates must have an M.A. Degree in Fine Arts in addition to the other Faculty Requirements.

Requirements for Postgraduate Diploma in Music:
Candidates with first degree with a minimum CGPA of 2.50 on a 5-point scale in disciplines other than Music, with demonstrative competent potentials for music studies; or graduates with bachelor’s degree in Music with a minimum CGPA of 2.00 on a 5-point scale are eligible to apply. HND holders in Music with appropriate CGPA may be considered. In addition, all applicants into the programme shall be auditioned.

Candidates must have a Master Degree in music with a CGPA of at least 3.50 or its equivalent in addition to the other Faculty requirements.
Requirements for Master of Arts in Music:
Candidates with a recognized University bachelor’s degree in Music, with at least a Second Class Honours Degree (Lower Division) or as may be stipulated by the School of Graduate Studies from time to time. Bachelor of Church Music (BCM) holders from a recognized theological institution or any other accredited institution may be considered for admission into the M.A. programme if their transcripts reveal that the courses and tutelage covered in the BCM programmes are equivalent to those in Bachelor of Music and Bachelor of Arts in Music programmes of conventional higher Institutions. In cases where remediable deficiencies are discovered in the BCM programmes undertaken, the candidate shall audit relevant courses at the undergraduate level, or go through the PGDM programme.
B. FACULTY OF COMMUNICATION AND MEDIA STUDIES
All Ph.D Programmes require a minimum CGPA of 3.50 on a 5- point scale. In addition, to be found admissible, candidates must score a minimum of 60% in the admission interview.
11. DEPARTMENT OF JOURNALISM AND MEDIA STUDIES
(i) Postgraduate Diploma (PGD) in Journalism and Media Studies
(ii) Master of Science (MSc) in Journalism and Media Studies
(iii) Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Journalism and Media Studies
Requirements for PGD in Journalism and Media Studies
(i) Higher National Diploma (Upper Credit) in Mass Communication or any other related discipline in Communication or Social Sciences/Business Administration from a recognized Polytechnic or University approved by the Senate of University of Port Harcourt.
(ii) Bachelor’s degree with at least Second Class Division from areas not related to Communication.
(iii) Bachelor’s degree not lower than Third Class Division in a Communication related discipline of a recognized university.
Requirements for M.Sc in Journalism and Media Studies
(i) A Bachelor’s Degree not lower that Second Class Division with a CGPA of not less than 3.00 on a 5-point scale or 2.50 on a 4-point scale in Communication Studies from a recognized university approved by the Senate of the University of Port Harcourt.
(ii) Postgraduate Diploma in Communication Studies with a CGPA not less than 3.50.
Requirements for Ph.D in Journalism and Media Studies
(i) Candidate must possess a Master’s Degree with a CGPA not less than 3.50 on a 5-point scale in Mass Communication, Communication Studies/Arts. In addition, candidates seeking admission into Ph.D programme in the department must submit to the Departmental Graduate Studies Committee, a written proposal of a topic of their interest which they must defend before the admission can be granted.
(ii) Membership of professional bodies such as APCON, NIPR, ACCE, etc may not be compulsory but may be an advantage.
12. DEPARTMENT OF BROADCASTING
(i) Postgraduate Diploma (PGD) in Broadcasting

Requirements for Postgraduate Diploma (PGD) in Broadcasting
(i) Higher National Diploma (Upper Credit) in Mass Communication or any other related discipline in Communication or Social Sciences/Business Administration from a recognized Polytechnic or University approved by the Senate of University of Port Harcourt.
(ii) Bachelor’s degree with at least Second Class Division from areas not related to Communication.
(iii) Bachelor’s degree not lower than Third Class Division in a Communication related discipline of a recognized university.
Requirements for Master of Science (M.Sc) in Broadcasting
(i) A Bachelor’s degree not lower than Second Class Lower Division with a CGPA not less than 3.50 on a 5-point scale or 3.00 on a 4-point scale in Broadcast Media Studies or any related discipline in Communication from a recognized University approved by the Senate of the University of Port Harcourt.
Requirements for Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) in Broadcasting
(i) Master’s Degree with a CGPA not less than 3.50 on a 5-point scale in Mass Communication, Communication Studies/Arts. In addition, candidates seeking admission into Ph.D programme in the department must submit to the Departmental Graduate Studies Committee, a written proposal of a topic of their interest which they must defend before the admission can be granted.

Requirements for Master of Science (M.Sc) in Public Relations
Candidate must possess at least a Second Class Honours Degree (B.Sc or BA) with a CGPA not less than 3.00 on a 5-point scale in any of these areas: Advertising, Public Relations, and any Mass Communication related area or a PGD in Public Relations and Advertising with a CGPA not less than 3.50 on a 5-point scale.
Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) in Public Relations
Candidate must possess a Master’s Degree with a CGPA not less than 3.00 on a 5-point scale in any of these areas: Mass Communication, Public Relations, Advertising, and any Mass Communication related area. Such candidates must also submit a written proposal on a topic of interest in their desired area of study to the Departmental Graduate Studies Committee. The proposal must be satisfactorily defended before the Committee prior to admission shortlisting.
Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) in Advertising
Candidate must possess a Master’s Degree with a CGPA not less than 3.00 on a 5-point scale in any of these areas: Mass Communication, Public Relations, Advertising, and any Mass Communication related area. (ii) Postgraduate Diploma in Communication Studies with a CGPA not less than 3.50.
(iii) MA Degree in Communication related discipline with a CGPA not less than 3.50 on a 5-point scale or 3.00 on a 4-point scale.
Requirements for Master of Film Art (MFA – Professional) in Film and Multimedia Studies
(i) A Bachelor’s Degree in a related discipline to Film and TV Studies.
Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) in Film and Multimedia Studies
(i) Candidates must obtain a Master’s Degree in Film/TV Studies with a CGPA not less than 4.00 on 5-point scale, 3.20 on a 4-point scale and 4.00 on a 3-point scale.
C. FACULTY OF EDUCATION (FULL-TIME, PART-TIME AND SANDWICH)
M.Ed and Ph.D Programmes on Full-Time and Part-Time basis; M.Ed Sandwich (Long Vacation) programme. Candidates applying for Ph.D programme in Faculty of Education must have a good M.Ed Degree. All Ph.D
candidates are expected to attend a pre-admission oral interview, at which they are required to defend their written proposals. All Masters candidates must have at least a Second Class Honours Degree (Lower Division).
15. DEPARTMENT OF CURRICULUM STUDIES AND

Candidates are required to possess a good degree not lower than Third Class from a recognized University in relevant teaching subjects and a Higher National Diploma (HND) in any of the related teaching subjects obtained at Upper Credit.
MASTER OF EDUCATION (M.ED) BUSINESS EDUCATION
Candidates for the M.Ed Degree in Business Education must have one of the following addition to meeting all School of Graduate Studies requirement.
i. An Honours in Business Education with a minimum of Second Class Division of the University of Port Harcourt or any other recognized University.
ii. An Honours Degree in related Business Courses plus a Postgraduate Diploma in Education with a CGPA not less than 3.50 points in a 5-point scale.
iii. Third Class Honours Degree in Business Education plus a Post Graduate Diploma in Education with a CGPA not below 3.50points in a 5-point scale.
iv. Higher National Diploma with Upper Credit or its equivalent in Business related field plus a postgraduate diploma with a CGPA not below 3.50.
Requirement: Same as Faculty.
18. DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATIONAL PSYCHOLOGY, GUIDANCE AND COUNSELLING
Both the Full-Time and Part-Time (Ph.D & M.Ed) and Sandwich (Long Vacation) M.Ed Programmes have the following areas:

The following categories of candidates may be admitted on application into the Programme:
(i) Graduates of the University of Port Harcourt or any other approved University who have obtained approved Bachelor’s Degree in Adult Education with at least a Second Class Honours Degree (Lower Division) or its equivalent.
(ii) Candidates who did not major in Adult Education but obtained at least 2nd Class Honours Degree or above and with a minimum CGPA of 3.50 in the Postgraduate Diploma in Education. Such candidates would be required to do some remedial courses as prescribed in the handbook.
20. DEPARTMENT OF SPORT AND EXERCISE SCIENCE
(A) M.Sc (Ed) Professional and Sandwich (Long Vacation) Programmes have the following areas:

(i) Candidates must possess a Bachelor’s Degree in Sport and Exercise Science or Human Kinetics or Human Kinetics and Health Education (Integrated Major). Preferably holders of Second Class Honours Degree (Lower Division) from a recognized University or its equivalent.
(ii) Candidates with a Bachelor’s Degree in Science or Science Education
after having obtained the Nigerian Certificate in Education (NCE) in Sport and Exercise Science or Human Kinetics and Health Education (this category of candidates may be required to take some additional courses in Sport and Exercise Science or related courses as may be prescribed by the Department).
(iii) A Pass Credit level in Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE).
(B) Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) in Sport and Exercise Science

(ii) Each applicant must submit a proposal on area of research interest and pass an interview by the Departmental Graduate Studies Committee.

To be eligible for admission into the Professional Masters (PM) programme, applicants should have the following:

However, candidates who obtained their O’Level Certificates before 2012 without a credit pass in Mathematics or any of the Science subjects but have taken a remedial course in the School of Basic Studies may be considered.
Requirements for PGD Programmme (PGD-SLT)
Candidates must have either a B.Sc, B.Tech or BSLT Degree not lower than a Third Class with minimum CGPA of at least 1.50 or HND with a minimum of Upper Credit in any of the following areas: Biochemistry/Chemistry Laboratory Technology, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Medical Biochemistry, Pure and Industrial Chemistry, Pure and Applied Chemistry, Agricultural Technology, Virology Laboratory Technology, Microbiology Laboratory Technology, Nursing, Medical Laboratory Science, Physiology, Anatomy and
Pharmacology, Geology, Geology/Mining Laboratory Technology, Mining Science, Mining Engineering Technology and Mineral Resources Engineering Technology, Microbiology, Biology, Biology/Biotechnology Laboratory Technology. Industrial Chemistry/Petrochemical Laboratory Technology, Chemical/Petroleum Laboratory Technology, Food Science Technology, and any of the Science Laboratory Technology Degree obtained from institutions recognized by the Senate of the University of Port Harcourt.
