UNEC SUG president suspended over allegations of assault and financial misconduct

In a landmark move for student governance, the Students’ Union Government (SUG) of the University of Nigeria, Enugu Campus (UNEC), has officially suspended its President, Comrade Okolo Bethel Chinwugo.

The decision was reached during a General Plenary session held on March 29, 2026. The motion for suspension saw overwhelming support, securing 31 out of 35 votes—surpassing the constitutional two-thirds majority requirement. The action follows a formal petition submitted on March 19, backed by 26 members of the House.

The embattled President faces a series of grave accusations that triggered the legislative intervention:

• Assault and Abuse of Power: Allegations include the physical assault of a student at the Mbonu Ojike Hostel and the use of his office to issue threats of expulsion.
• Financial Misconduct: Reports suggest the unauthorized collection of fees from photographers and vendors during the matriculation ceremony, with funds allegedly diverted into a personal account.
• Violation of Conduct: General accusations of intimidation and the infringement of student rights.

Effective immediately, Comrade Ezeh Otuomasirichukwu Promise, the Vice President, has assumed the role of Acting President. To ensure a thorough investigation, the following directives have been issued:

• Handover Mandate: The suspended President must surrender all union properties within 48 hours.
• Investigative Panel: A seven-man independent committee will be inaugurated to probe the allegations, with a mandate to submit a report within 21 days.
• Restriction: Chinwugo is strictly prohibited from representing himself as the SUG President during the suspension period.
