BSU SUG disclaims fake news of indefinite suspension of executive cabinet members

Lawal 10 months ago

The attention of the Students' Union has been drawn to a malicious and misleading publication circulating on social media, particularly a post on Facebook allegedly authored by the Speaker of Parliament, announcing the indefinite suspension of key executive cabinet members, namely:

Union President – Comr. Oyi Alechenu Samuel

Vice President – Comr. Agundo Evelyn Msendoo

Financial Secretary – Comr. Ormye Meshach

As the duly elected Secretary General of the Students’ Union, I wish to categorically state that no formal correspondence or parliamentary communication has been received by my office regarding the purported suspension of the aforementioned executives.

This publication is, therefore, false, baseless, and highly condemnable. It constitutes a breach of due process, a misrepresentation of facts, and an outright abuse of parliamentary privilege. It is not only mischievous but a calculated attempt to disrupt the smooth functioning of the Students' Union and tarnish the image of its leadership.

To further clarify:

1. The alleged "gross misconduct" cited as the basis for suspension lacks substance and constitutional backing. The executive members were summoned less than 24 hours prior and still made efforts to submit the financial report, with the bank statement pending formal approval — a delay that is purely procedural and not of their making.

2. No financial embezzlement has been established, nor has any audit report indicated wrongdoing. The vague reference to “gross misconduct” without specifics only underscores the politically motivated nature of this agenda.

3. According to the Students’ Union Constitution, suspension of executive members must follow due process, including:

Formal allegations with clear evidence,

Fair hearing and defense by the accused persons,

Deliberation and resolution by a properly convened House,

Official notification through the General Secretary’s office.

None of these due procedures were adhered to.

The Students' Union hereby disassociates itself from this illegal pronouncement and urges the university community, institutions, and the general public to disregard such propaganda in its entirety.

All executive members remain in office and continue to discharge their constitutional duties until otherwise decided by the appropriate and constitutional procedures.
