Council of Legal Education list of approved Universities for Law Programmes in Nigeria
The Council of Legal Education (CLE), through the Nigerian Law School, has officially released the updated list of universities approved to offer the Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) programme in Nigeria. The announcement is aimed at guiding prospective law students, parents, and other stakeholders on institutions accredited to run Law programmes in the country.
According to the public notice, only universities accredited by the Council of Legal Education are authorized to admit students into Law programmes. The Council warned that any university running a Law programme without approval is acting against the regulations guiding legal education in Nigeria and may face regulatory sanctions.
The Council further stated that students who graduate from unapproved universities will not be eligible for admission into the Nigerian Law School, which remains a compulsory requirement for anyone intending to practice law in Nigeria.
The Council also announced that some universities have been placed on temporary suspension (moratorium) from admitting students into their Law programmes. These include:
- Lead City University, Ibadan – Moratorium on admission for five (5) years from 2023/2024 to 2027/2028 academic session.
- Baze University, Abuja – Moratorium on admission for three (3) years from 2023/2024 to 2025/2026 academic session.
- Nigeria Police Academy, Wudil – Moratorium on admission for two (2) years from 2024/2025 to 2025/2026 academic session.
Students who wish to study Law are strongly advised to confirm the accreditation status of their chosen universities before accepting admission. This is important to avoid future issues regarding eligibility for the Nigerian Law School.
The Council reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining high standards in legal education and ensuring that only properly accredited institutions are allowed to train future legal professionals in Nigeria.
