Court awards N5m against UNIJOS lecturer for victimising a student

A post-graduate student of the University of Jos, Georgia Mark Davou, has been awarded an N5million compensation for general and exemplary damages by a  Federal High Court sitting in Jos, the Plateau state capital.

The judgment was delivered after the student in 2018, sued a lecturer with the university, Mr. Thaddeus Longduut, for irrationally withdrawing her from the master's program on allegation of poor performance without complying with the school regulations. She further accused the lecturer of not letting her access her results and was denied a fair hearing when she petitioned the school for access to her results.

The trial judge, Justice M.H. Kurya also ordered the University of Jos to immediately pay the student N100,000 in damages, reinstate the student, change her supervisor and ensure the final defense of her thesis is done within a reasonable time.

The court ordered the lecturer to pay the damages into the student’s account before taking any other legal steps on the judgment.
