EKSU SUG notice to students following a tragic death of a student due to reckless driving
The student community is currently in a state of sober reflection following the recent spate of tragic deaths within our ranks. While we mourn, it is also imperative to acknowledge that safety is a collective responsibility; some of these incidents arose from circumstances that require us to be more vigilant in our personal conduct.
The leadership of the EKSU Students' Union is committed to your safety and is currently executing the following:
i. We are engaging relevant stakeholders to issue a formal, stern warning to the owners of the truck involved in the recent fatality. We shall be demanding accountability and a commitment to responsible driving standards on the Ado-Iworoko-Ifaki axis.
ii. In partnership with the University Management, we are planning a sensitisation programme, during which every student would be encouraged on the need to always speak up before issues confronting them escalate into something that could be out of control. Help is usually available, if sought after, before situations spiral out of control.
iii. Various strategic steps are underway to bolster the overall security and physical safety of our students. We will not relent until a safer environment is secured for everyone.
I passionately appeal to every student to exercise caution, patience and refrain from any acts that could negatively impact their lives or well-being. Whether on the road or in your daily activities, please prioritise your safety above all else, we shall join force with you to achieve this.
"With a heavy heart and a spirit of sobriety, we commiserate with the families of the departed souls. We pray that the Almighty will put an end to sudden death in our midst."
