The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) in Nigeria has shut down 62 illicit degree-awarding institutions.

A fake National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Orientation Camp was also shut down.

Prof. Bolaji Owasanoye, the Chairman, made the disclosure on Tuesday at a Youth Dialogue on Corruption in Tertiary Institutions in Abuja.

Owasanoye, who was represented by Hannatu Mohammed, ICPC Board member in charge of youth, stated that the commission had prosecuted the criminals.

According to the chairman, no nation can advance beyond the level and quality of its education.

According to Owasanoye, the ICPC established anti-corruption vanguards in schools to further the battle against corruption, particularly in tertiary institutions.

He claims that the vanguards give student members the ability to create zero tolerance for corruption and instil behavioural change in their colleagues.

According to Owasanoye, the ICPC performed a System Study and Review in the university system to uncover activities that supported corruption.

Bribery, gratification, sexual harassment and sexual inducement, examination malpractices, over-invoicing, and over-inflation of contract values were detected in the study.
