Tuition Fee Reversal: LASG Refunds N209M to LASU Students

Lagos State University, LASU students get N209 Million refunded back to them by Lagos State Government following the reversal of the institution’s tuition fees last year.

Lagos State government has refunded N209million to students of the Lagos State University (LASU) following its reversal of the institution’s school fees.

Speaking at the event held in the school campus, the state governor, Mr Babatunde Fashola said the refund is the money paid in excess by the students before the reversal of the tuition fees last year, adding that the sum of N209million is the first tranche of the refund.

The governor represented by the special adviser to the governor on education, Otunba Fatai Olukoga said the recipients were 100 level students and 200 level Direct Entry students while the remaining will be paid during the second tranche of the refund.

He assured that the remaining would be released later, saying that government is committed to ensuring the wellbeing of the students.

He stated that when the government reversed the fees, many people dubbed it a political move to win elections, adding that LASU remains the institution paying the least school fees in the country.

Fashola said the government is not unaware of comments from critical stakeholders that have made mockery of university education in the country because of the low school fees.

He said, “We are also not unaware of the moves by the same stakeholders to frustrate our efforts at ensuring the quality of LASU programmes. Notwithstanding the frustration, we are relentlessly committed to making LASU a world class university of our time.
