University of Africa, Toru-Orua gets NUC's approval for new postgraduate programmes

The National Universities Commission (NUC) has officially granted approval to the University of Africa, Toru-Orua (UAT), Bayelsa State, to commence several new postgraduate programmes.

​The approval follows a successful resource verification visit by a panel of experts who assessed the human and material resources available at the institution. In a letter dated January 30, 2026, signed by the Director of Academic Planning, Abubakar M. Girei, on behalf of the Executive Secretary, the Commission authorized the establishment of these programmes effective from the 2025/2026 academic session.

​Approved Programmes

​The approval covers full-time PGD, Masters, and PhD levels for the following academic disciplines:

​Accounting (PGD, M.Sc., and PhD)

​Biology (PGD, M.Sc., and PhD)

​Business Administration (PGD, M.Sc., MBA, and PhD)

​Biochemistry (PGD, M.Sc., and PhD)

​Educational Management (PGD, M.Ed., and PhD)

​Mass Communication (PGD, M.Sc., and PhD)

​Computer Science (PGD, M.Sc., and PhD)

​Political Science (PGD, M.Sc., and PhD)

​Theatre and Film Studies (PGD, M.A., and PhD)

​Important Guidelines for Implementation

​The NUC emphasized that this current approval is strictly for full-time mode only. The University is required to notify the Commission separately before commencing any part-time versions of these postgraduate programmes.

​Furthermore, the University of Africa is mandated to:

​Maintain the approved titles and nomenclature for all courses.

​Provide continuous adequate human and material resources to support the growth of these programmes.

​Seek further approval from the Commission before making any changes to the approved curriculum or titles.

​This development marks a significant expansion for the University of Africa, Toru-Orua, as it bolsters its capacity for advanced research and higher education in the region.
