NUT Commends Akpabio for Recruiting 5,000 Teachers

Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) commends Gov. Godswill Akpabio for recruiting 5,000 teachers.

The Akwa Ibom wing of Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), has lauded Gov. Godswill Akpabio for recruiting 5,000 teachers into the service.

The Chairman of NUT in the State, Mr Etim Ukpong, made the commendation in an interview with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Uyo on Thursday.

Ukpong said the employment would go a long way to boost the success of the free and compulsory education policy
of the State Government.

NAN reports that the free and compulsory education policy introduced in 2008/2009 session for public primary and secondary schools had been hampered by inadequate facilities and personnel.

He also thanked the state governor for approving the migration of serving school principals to salary grade level 17 with designation of Principals-General.

Ukpong said the teachers were grateful for the prompt implementation of the Teachers Enhancement Allowance (TEA) of 27.5 per cent in the state.

The NUT boss, however, complained that some teachers had yet to receive their monthly salaries in six community schools taken over by the state government since Jan. 2013.

Ukpong appealed to the governor to approve the regularisation of the employment status of teachers absorbed into the State
Public Service.

“These sons and daughters of Akwa Ibom State have been serving the state diligently since last year without salaries”, Ukpong said.

He also appealed to the state government to assist the union in completing and furnishing the Teachers House built by the union.

The chairman requested for the donation of a Toyota Coaster Bus to NUT to ease movement of members on official engagement within and outside the state.

Ukpong said the union, under his leadership, was committed to making all teachers in the state ICT compliant to help prepare students for e-testing examinations.

He called on the state’s Ministry of Education to support the union in its drive to supply laptops to teachers and provision of practical computer training for members. (NAN)
