MOTIVATION AND PERFORMANCE IN THE PUBLIC SECTOR
ABSTRACT
This study was intended to examine motivation and employee performance in the public sector. This study was guided by the following objectives; to provide a basic understanding of motivation there are three major factor that influence motivation, individual difference, job characteristics and organizational practices and to develop on effective motivation programme, managers must consider how these factors interact to affect employee job performance. The study employed the descriptive and explanatory design; questionnaires in addition to library research were applied in order to collect data. Primary and secondary data sources were used and data was analyzed using the chi square statistical tool at 5% level of significance which was presented in frequency tables and percentage. The respondents under the study were 32 staff of NTA, Aba. The study findings revealed that there is a significant difference between motivated workers in public sector and those not motivated; based on the findings from the study, Performance appraisal should not be perceived just as a regular activity but its importance should be recognized and communicated down the line to all the employees.
