THE CAUSES OF POLLUTION AND ITS EFFECT ON MAN AND ITS ENVIRONMENT
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
As a result of the continued industrialization of our society and continuous movement from rural areas to urban areas, there have been the continual references o factors, which affect our environment of which one of them is pollution. The rapid development of technology and population growth are over powering man’s ability to preserve or protect the environment suitable for his survival examples, towns like port Harcourt associated with crude oil and Aba, a market town cannot be free from pollution.
In an industrialized society, manufactured chemical are used, more and more factories produced large amount of waste, which cannot be destroyed by natural process. The waste accumulates in the surroundings leading to damages. This is pollution as a result of this air, land and water become increasingly more polluted and the survival of all living things is threatened for some few decades, however, industrialization has caused a tremendous increase in the release of pollutants into the air, land and water. In many places, these pollutants are present in concentration that causes harm to human animals, and life of plants and to property as well.
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEMS
The problem of pollution in Nigeria cities is as a result of urbanization, which is accompanied by industrialization and economic development. The facts that this discharge from industries and their effluents are toxic in nature as they contain mercury, lead, nitrogen oxide and sulphurdioxide and have in one way or the other contributed to the deterioration of our environment as a result of pollution. However, the exhaust of automobile, the discharge of domestic wastes, fertilizers and industrial waste should not be over looked in light of this, the following questions are asked:
Does urbanization encourage pollution?
Has the construction of industries encourage pollution?
In what way does man contributes to pollution in his environment.
These are some of the questions the researcher hopes to examine more importantly as it affects some areas in Egor local government area of Edo State.
OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY
1. To identify the various sources of pollution.
2. Has the construction of industries encourage pollution?
3. In what ways does man contribute to pollution in his environment?
These are some of the questions the researcher hopes to examine more importantly as it affects some areas in Egor local government area of Edo State.
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
The important of this research is that, this work will provide necessary ways and means in which the problem could best be tackled and providing enlightenment campaign or enlightening. The public on the effects of wasteful disposal and exposing them to the different problems associated with acquiring living that pollutes the environment.
SCOPE OF THE STUDY
The study is centralized on the pollution of environment by industrialized process, fuel, wood burning, gas flaring and automobile discharge in Egor local government and eradicating the problem of pollution in Egor local government area:
HYPOTHESIS
The following research hypotheses have been postulated by the researcher.
The presence of industries in residential areas and traffic congestion encourage pollution.
Educating the people of the dangers of pollutions and tend to reduce pollution and on the long run reduced its effect on man.
Indiscipline burning of bushes and refuse disposal causes pollution.
BASIC RESEARCH QUESTIONS
This research is geared towards findings to findings problem and the following will be asked.
What are the various sources of pollution?
What are the causes of pollution?
What are the effects of pollutions?
Has pollution have any effect in human life?
DEFINITION OF TERMS
Automobile discharge: some from pipe of vehicles resulting from burning of fuels or oil.
Congestion: hindering of movement freely.
Infection disease; illness of the body spread easily from one person to the other.
Pollution; The release by man of substance into the environment in quantities, which are harmful to himself or other living things or in some way reduced the quality of human life.
Sanitation: It is an arrangement to protect public health for efficient disposal of sewages.
