Strike suspended: university workers set to resume after salary dispute

Normalcy is set to return to federal universities as the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) has suspended their nationwide strike, effective November 5, 2024. The strike, which began due to four months of withheld salaries, was suspended following government commitments to partial payments.

The suspension was announced in a circular titled “Update on Indefinite Strike Action,” signed by NASU General Secretary Prince Peters Adeyemi and SSANU National President Comrade Mohammed Ibrahim. The government recently agreed to pay 50% of the owed salaries, with one month’s worth disbursed over the weekend. The strike suspension will last one month while the unions await the remaining payment.

Meanwhile, the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT) is continuing with its planned protests, stating that the Federal Government must pay 50% of their five-month withheld salaries by November 13, 2024, the end of their two-week ultimatum.
