UNICAL SUG senate suspends three principal officers

The Senate of the Student Union Government (SUG), University of Calabar, has announced the suspension of three principal officers of the 12th Cohesive Senate pending the outcome of an ongoing investigation.

In an official notice dated 12th November 2024 and signed by the Senate President, Ogar Edwin Elaunire, the affected officers include the Deputy Senate President, Sen. Egbegi Uchechukwu Pascaline, the Scribe of the Senate, Sen. Johnson Osaminen Abang, and the Sergeant-at-Arms, Sen. Eze Chukwuebuka Stephen.

According to the statement, the suspension is a temporary measure aimed at ensuring a fair and transparent process while allegations of gross misconduct, abuse of power, and negligence are being investigated.

To ensure continuity, the following senators have been appointed to serve in acting capacities:

Sen. Emmanuel Ihuonam Goodnews – Acting Deputy Senate President

Sen. Enyiofem Eta Eta – Acting Scribe of the Senate

High Chief Sen. Bassey Echu – Acting Sergeant-at-Arms

The Senate President urged all members of the SUG and the general student body to cooperate with the acting officers and the investigation committee to facilitate a quick and just resolution.

He emphasized that the suspension does not imply guilt but is a procedural step to maintain integrity during the investigation.
