The Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID), has issued a public health advisory urging students to remain vigilant following a recent outbreak of Lassa fever in parts of the country.

In a press release dated February 7, 2026, and signed by the Director of Health, Abdullah Abdulhakeem Abiola, alongside the Assistant Director of Health, Fatima I. Ali, the Faculty emphasized the need for students to prioritize their health and adhere strictly to preventive measures.

The statement explained that Lassa fever is a viral illness primarily transmitted through contact with food or household items contaminated by rat urine or droppings, as well as direct contact with bodily fluids of infected persons.

Students were advised to maintain clean surroundings free from rodents, store food in covered containers, wash hands regularly with soap and water, avoid drying food items along roadsides, and refrain from contact with the bodily fluids of sick individuals. The Faculty also urged students to seek immediate medical attention if they experience symptoms such as fever, weakness, vomiting, sore throat, or body pains.

Reaffirming its commitment to a safe academic environment, the Faculty noted that students’ health and well-being remain a top priority. The statement also wished returning students success in their academic pursuits and warmly welcomed new Part One students to the Faculty of Pharmacy.

The advisory underscores UNIMAID’s proactive approach to safeguarding public health within the university community.
