UNIUYO SUG bans use of permanent markers by students in all lecture halls across the campus
The Students' Union Government (SUG) of the University of Uyo, through the Office of the Director of Academics, has officially announced a strict prohibition on the use of permanent markers in all lecture halls and classrooms across the campus.
In a memorandum dated January 23, 2026, the Director of Academics, Miracle Victor Etim, highlighted that this directive is part of the ongoing "Campus Clean Slate Project." The initiative was launched to ensure that all whiteboards remain well-maintained, clean, and legible for effective learning.
The Directorate expressed concern over the persistent use of permanent markers by some students, noting that the practice:
Renders whiteboards difficult or impossible to clean.
Defeats the purpose of the "Clean Slate Project."
Imposes an unnecessary financial burden on student union resources.
Strict Disciplinary Actions
Effective immediately, any student found violating this directive will face severe penalties, including:
Official Reporting: Immediate referral to the Dean of Student Affairs via the SUG Directorate of Academics.
Financial Restitution: Mandatory replacement of the affected board at the student’s expense or payment for restoration services, estimated between ₦15,000 and ₦25,000, depending on the damage.
Community Service: A mandatory one-semester community service assignment under the Directorate of Sanitation and Environment.
The SUG leadership has urged all students to cooperate fully with this new policy to help maintain a professional and conducive learning environment. The memo concluded by emphasizing that these measures are in the collective interest of academic excellence and student welfare.
Signed:
Miracle Etim
