UNIZIK Postgraduate Admission Requirements For New Students 2024/2025
FACULTY OF AGRICULTURE
1. AGRIC ECONOMICS AND EXTENSION
a. O’level
5 O’ level credits to include English Language, Maths, Chemistry and Biology/Agricultural Science in not more than two sittings. Pass in Maths may be considered if the candidate has a credit in Physics or vice versa. The 5 credits must be obtained in not more than 2 sittings. A credit pass in Agricultural Science must be backed up with at least a pass in Biology
b. Postgraduate Diploma (PGD)
The candidate must be a graduate of Nnamdi Azikiwe University or a recognized University with at least a Third Class degree in Agriculture or related discipline or a minimum of Upper Credit in the Higher National Diploma, HND, from a recognized Institution in Agriculture or related discipline
c. Master’s Degree (MSc)
i. The candidate must have a first degree in Agricultural Economics or Extension and related areas with an FCGPA of not less than 3.0 from Nnamdi Azikiwe University or a recognized University
ii. A candidate with a Postgraduate Diploma in Agricultural Economics or Extension and related areas with an FCGPA of not less than 3.50 may also be admitted provided the University Matriculation requirements are satisfied
d. Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) Degree
A candidate who holds a master’s degree in Agricultural Economics or Extension and related areas with an FCGPA not less than 3.50 on a 5 Point Scale or an average of 60%, from Nnamdi Azikiwe University or a recognized University may be admitted provided the University Matriculation requirement is satisfied
2. ANIMAL SCIENCE AND PRODUCTION
a. O’level
5 O’ level credits to include English Language, Maths, Chemistry and Biology/Agricultural Science in not more than two sittings. Pass in Maths may be considered if the candidate has a credit in Physics or vice versa. The 5 credits must be obtained in not more than 2 sittings. A credit pass in Agricultural Science must be backed up with at least a pass in Biology.
b. Postgraduate Diploma (PGD)
- The candidate must be a graduate of Nnamdi Azikiwe University or a recognized University with at least a Third Class degree in or a minimum of Upper Credit in the Higher National Diploma, HND, from a recognized Institution in Agriculturally oriented courses like Animal Production/Animal Sciences/Health, Wildlife/Fisheries, etc.
c. Master’s Degree (MSc)
i. The candidate must have a first degree in Animal Science with an FCGPA of not less than 3.0 from Nnamdi Azikiwe University or a recognized University
ii. A candidate with a Postgraduate Diploma in Animal Science with an FCGPA of not less than 3.50 may also be admitted provided the University Matriculation requirements are satisfied
3. FOOD SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY
a. O’level
5 O’ level credits to include English Language, Maths, Chemistry and Biology/Agricultural Science in not more than two sittings. Pass in Maths may be considered if the candidate has a credit in Physics or vice versa. The 5 credits must be obtained in not more than 2 sittings. A credit pass in Agricultural Science must be backed up with at least a pass in Biology.
b. Postgraduate Diploma (PGD)
The candidate must be a graduate of Nnamdi Azikiwe University or a recognized University with at least a Third Class degree in Food Science and Technology or allied disciplines or a minimum of Upper Credit in Food Science and Technology or Food Science or Food Technology in the Higher National Diploma, HND, from a recognized Institution
c. Master’s Degree (MSc)
i. The candidate must have a first degree in Food Science & Technology or in related fields such as: Biochemistry, Chemistry, Agricultural Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Biochemical Engineering, Microbiology, Industrial Microbiology, Industrial Chemistry or any other related course acceptable to the Department of Food Science and Technology of Nnamdi Azikiwe University with an FCGPA of not less than 3.0 from Nnamdi Azikiwe University or a recognized University
ii. A candidate with a Postgraduate Diploma in Food Science & Technology or relevant discipline with an FCGPA of not less than 3.50 may also be admitted provided the University Matriculation requirements are satisfied
FACULTY OF ARTS
1. DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH
a. O’level
5 O’ level credits to include English Language, Literature in English and any other 3 subjects obtained at not more than two sittings.
b. Master’s Degree (MA)
i. The candidate must have a first degree in English Language or English Literature, or B.A. Education / English or Linguistics with an FCGPA of not less than 3.0 from Nnamdi Azikiwe University or a recognized University
c. Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) Degree
A candidate who holds a master’s degree in English Language or Literature with an FCGPA not less than 3.50 on a 5 Point Scale or an average of 60%, from Nnamdi Azikiwe University or a recognized University may be admitted provided the University Matriculation requirement is satisfied
2. DEPARTMENT OF HISTORY AND INTERNATIONAL STUDIES
a. O’level
5 O’ level credits to include English Language, History/ Government/ Social Studies and any other 3 subjects obtained at not more than two sittings.
b. Postgraduate Diploma (PGD)
The candidate must be a graduate of Nnamdi Azikiwe University or a recognized University with at least a Third Class degree or a minimum of Upper Credit in the Higher National Diploma, HND, from a recognized Institution
c. Master’s Degree (MA)
i. The candidate must have a first degree in the History and International Studies, History and Diplomatic Studies, History and International Relations as well as History and Strategic Studies with an FCGPA of not less than 3.0 from Nnamdi Azikiwe University or a recognized University
ii. A candidate with a Postgraduate Diploma with an FCGPA of not less than 3.50 may also be admitted provided the University Matriculation requirements are satisfied
d. Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) Degree
A candidate who holds a master’s degree in History with an FCGPA not less than 3.50 on a 5 Point Scale or an average of 60%, from Nnamdi Azikiwe University or a recognized University may be admitted provided the University Matriculation requirement is satisfied
3. DEPARTMENT OF IGBO, AFRICAN AND ASIAN STUDIES
a. O’level
5 O’ level credits to include English Language, Igbo and any other 3 subjects obtained at not more than two sittings.
b. Postgraduate Diploma (PGD)
The candidate must be a graduate of Nnamdi Azikiwe University or a recognized University with at least a Third Class degree or a minimum of Upper Credit in the Higher National Diploma, HND, from a recognized Institution
c. Master’s Degree (MA)
i. The candidate must have a first degree in Igbo or Linguistics or both or Igbo/Education with an FCGPA of not less than 3.0 from Nnamdi Azikiwe University or a recognized University
ii. A candidate with a Postgraduate Diploma with an FCGPA of not less than 3.50 may also be admitted provided the University Matriculation requirements are satisfied
d. Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) Degree
A candidate who holds a master’s degree in a Igbo or Linguistics or both with an FCGPA not less than 3.50 on a 5 Point Scale or an average of 60%, from Nnamdi Azikiwe University or a recognized University may be admitted provided the University Matriculation requirement is satisfied
4. DEPARTMENT OF LINGUISRTICS
a. O’level
5 O’ level credits to include English Language and any other 4 subjects obtained at not more than two sittings.
- Students are required to demonstrate the ability to read and write one African language. Students are strongly advised to acquire knowledge of an additional European language.
b. Postgraduate Diploma(PGD)
The candidate must be a graduate of Nnamdi Azikiwe University or a recognized University with at least a Third Class degree or a minimum of Upper Credit in the Higher National Diploma, HND, from a recognized Institution
c. Master’s Degree (MA)
i. The candidate must have a first degree in Linuistics or relevant discipline with an FCGPA of not less than 3.0 from Nnamdi Azikiwe University or a recognized University
ii. A candidate with a Postgraduate Diploma with an FCGPA of not less than 3.50 may also be admitted provided the University Matriculation requirements are satisfied
d. Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) Degree
A candidate who holds a master’s degree in Linguistics with an FCGPA not less than 3.50 on a 5 Point Scale or an average of 60%, from Nnamdi Azikiwe University or a recognized University may be admitted provided the University Matriculation requirement is satisfied
5. DEPARTMENT OF MODERN EUROPEAN LANGUAGES
a. O’level
5 O’ level credits to include English Language, French and any other 3 subjects [French is optional] obtained at not more than two sittings.
b. Postgraduate Diploma (PGD)
The candidate must be a graduate of Nnamdi Azikiwe University or a recognized University with at least a Third Class degree (B.A. Education/French) or a minimum of Upper Credit in the Higher National Diploma, HND, from a recognized Institution
c. Master’s Degree(MA)
i. The candidate must have a first degree in in French or French Studies, French Language or French Literary Studies with an FCGPA of not less than 3.0 from Nnamdi Azikiwe University or a recognized University
ii. A candidate with a Postgraduate Diploma in French, French Studies, French Language or French Literary Studies with an FCGPA of not less than 3.50 may also be admitted provided the University Matriculation requirements are satisfied
d. Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) Degree
A candidate who holds a Master’s degree in French, French Studies, French Language or French Literary Studies with an FCGPA not less than 3.50 on a 5 Point Scale or an average of 60%, from Nnamdi Azikiwe University or a recognized University may be admitted provided the University Matriculation requirement is satisfied

a. O’level
5 O’ level credits to include English Language and any other 4 subjects obtained at not more than two sittings.
b. Postgraduate Diploma (PGD)
The candidate must be a graduate of Nnamdi Azikiwe University or a recognized University with at least a Third Class degree or a minimum of Upper Credit in the Higher National Diploma, HND, from a recognized Institution
c. Master’s Degree (MA)
i. The candidate must have a first degree in Music with an FCGPA of not less than 3.0 from Nnamdi Azikiwe University or a recognized University
ii. A candidate with a Postgraduate Diploma in Music with an FCGPA of not less than 3.50 may also be admitted provided the University Matriculation requirements are satisfied
d. Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) Degree
A candidate who holds a master’s degree in Music with an FCGPA not less than 3.50 on a 5 Point Scale or an average of 60%, from Nnamdi Azikiwe University or a recognized University may be admitted provided the University Matriculation requirement is satisfied
7. DEPARTMENT OF RELIGION AND HUMAN RELATIONS
a. O’level
5 O’ level credits to include English Language, Christian Religious Knowledge [C.R.K.] and any other 3 subjects obtained at not more than two sittings.
b. Master’s Degree (MA)
i. The candidate must have a first degree in Religion or its relevant discipline with an FCGPA of not less than 3.0 from Nnamdi Azikiwe University or a recognized University
c. Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) Degree
A candidate who holds a master’s degree in Religion or its relevant discipline with an FCGPA not less than 3.50 on a 5 Point Scale or an average of 60%, from Nnamdi Azikiwe University or a recognized University may be admitted provided the University Matriculation requirement is satisfied
8. DEPARTMENT OF PHILOSOPHY
a. O’level
5 O’ level credits to include English Language and any other 4 subjects and at least a pass in maths obtained at not more than two sittings.
b. Master’s Degree (MA)
i. The candidate must have a first degree in Philosophy or combined honors in Philosophy with an FCGPA of not less than 3.0 from Nnamdi Azikiwe University or a recognized University
c. Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) Degree
A candidate who holds a master’s degree in Philosophy with an FCGPA not less than 3.50 on a 5 Point Scale or an average of 60%, from Nnamdi Azikiwe University or a recognized University may be admitted provided the University Matriculation requirement is satisfied
9. DEPARTMENT OF THEATRE ARTS
a. O’level
5 O’ level credits to include English Language, Literature in English and any other 3 subjects obtained at not more than two sittings.
b. Master’s Degree (MA)
i. The candidate must have a first degree in the relevant discipline with an FCGPA of not less than 3.0 from Nnamdi Azikiwe University or a recognized University

FACULTY OF BASIC MEDICAL SCIENCES
1. DEPARTMENT OF ANATOMY
The Department offers M.Sc in Anatomy
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
a. O’level
All candidates must have five credit passes including English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology obtained at not more than two sittings.
b. Master’s Degree (MSc)
i. The candidate must have a first degree in the relevant discipline with an FCGPA of not less than 3.0 from Nnamdi Azikiwe University or a recognized University
- B.Sc in Anatomy, MB; BS or its equivalent, BDS or BVM
- B.Sc in Medical Laboratory Sciences, Medical Rehabilitation, or Radiography and must have credited all their core Anatomy courses in the process.
2. DEPARTMENT OF PHYSIOLOGY
The department offers the M.Sc and Ph. D programmes in Human Physiology. Admission requirements for the programmes are as follows:
a. O’level
All candidates must have five credit passes including English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology obtained at not more than two sittings.
b. Master’s Degree
i. The candidate must have a first degree in the relevant discipline with an FCGPA of not less than 3.0 from Nnamdi Azikiwe University or a recognized University
Holders of Bachelor’s Degree in Physiology, Candidates with degrees related to Physiology such as Zoology, Biochemistry, Anatomy, Physiotherapy, and Pharmacology
Holders of MBBS, BDS, or DVM degrees
c. Ph. D Programme
A candidate who holds a master’s degree in a relevant discipline with an FCGPA not less than 3.50 on a 5 Point Scale or an average of 60%, from Nnamdi Azikiwe University or a recognized University may be admitted provided the University Matriculation requirement is satisfied

i. The candidate must have a first degree in Biochemistry with an FCGPA of not less than 3.0 from Nnamdi Azikiwe University or a recognized University
ii. A candidate with a Postgraduate Diploma in Biochemistry with an FCGPA of not less than 3.50 may also be admitted provided the University Matriculation requirements are satisfied
c. Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) Degree
A candidate who holds a master’s degree in Biochemistry or related discipline with an FCGPA not less than 3.50 on a 5 Point Scale or an average of 60%, from Nnamdi Azikiwe University or a recognized University may be admitted provided the University Matriculation requirement is satisfied

The candidate must be a graduate of Nnamdi Azikiwe University or a recognized University with at least a Third Class degree or a minimum of Upper Credit in the Higher National Diploma, HND, from a recognized Institution. Holders of FIRST, FILMT are qualified to apply.
c. Master’s Degree (MSc)
i. The candidate must have a first degree in the relevant discipline with an FCGPA of not less than 3.0 from Nnamdi Azikiwe University or a recognized University

b. Postgraduate Diploma (PGD)
The candidate must be a graduate of Nnamdi Azikiwe University or a recognized University with at least a Third Class degree or a minimum of Upper Credit in the Higher National Diploma, HND, from a recognized Institution
The Postgraduate Diploma in Botany is open to first degree holders in Science Education, Microbiology, Zoology, Biology, Agriculture, Forestry, other areas in Pure and Applied Sciences. Also graduates with good HND/HNC in related Biological sciences are eligible to apply.
c. Master’s Degree (MSc)
i. The candidate must have a first degree in the relevant discipline with an FCGPA of not less than 3.0 from Nnamdi Azikiwe University or a recognized University
ii. A candidate with a Postgraduate Diploma with an FCGPA of not less than 3.50 may also be admitted provided the University Matriculation requirements are satisfied
Admission to the programme is open to graduates with good B.Sc. degree in Botany, Plant Biology or Plant Science or in related discipline
d. Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) Degree
A candidate who holds a master’s degree in a relevant discipline with an FCGPA not less than 3.50 on a 5 Point Scale or an average of 60%, from Nnamdi Azikiwe University or a recognized University may be admitted provided the University Matriculation requirement is satisfied
4. DEPARTMENT OF PARASITOLOGY AND ENTOMOLOGY
a. O’level
5 O’ level credits to include English Language, Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology, physics obtained in not more than two sittings.
b. Postgraduate Diploma (PGD)
The candidate must be a graduate of Nnamdi Azikiwe University or a recognized University with at least a Third Class degree or a minimum of Upper Credit in the Higher National Diploma, HND, from a recognized Institution
The Post Graduate Diploma programme admission is open to B.Sc and HND Graduates or its equivalent in Biology, Zoology, Entomology, Parasitology, Applied Biology, Microbiology, and other related fields such as Crop Protection, Agricultural Economics, Medical Laboratory Technology, etc.
c. Master’s Degree (MSc)
i. The candidate must have a first degree in the relevant discipline with an FCGPA of not less than 3.0 from Nnamdi Azikiwe University or a recognized University
ii. A candidate with a Postgraduate Diploma with an FCGPA of not less than 3.50 may also be admitted provided the University Matriculation requirements are satisfied
d. Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) Degree

5. DEPARTMENT OF ZOOLOGY

5 O’ level credits to include English Language, Biology and any other 3 Science subjects with at least a pass in maths.
b. Postgraduate Diploma(PGD)
The candidate must be a graduate of Nnamdi Azikiwe University or a recognized University with at least a Third Class degree or a minimum of Upper Credit in the Higher National Diploma, HND, from a recognized Institution.
The Postgraduate Diploma in Zoology is open to first degree holders in Science Education, Microbiology, Botany, Biology, Agriculture, Forestry, Physiology and those with a third class or pass degrees in Zoology. Also graduates with good HND/HNC in related Biological sciences are eligible to apply.
c. Master’s Degree (MSc)
i. The candidate must have a first degree in the relevant discipline with an FCGPA of not less than 3.0 from Nnamdi Azikiwe University or a recognized University

Note: For candidates offering Economics of Education and Educational Planning as an area of specialization must possess Credit in Mathematics and English.
