UNN SUG gives update on shuttle drivers' strike

The Students' Union Government wishes to inform the entire students' community about the circumstances that led to the recent strike action by the campus shuttle drivers.

On 9th March 2026, the leadership of the Shuttle Drivers' Association, led by their chairman, met with the Students' Union Government to present their concerns. During the meeting, they explained the challenges they are currently facing, particularly the recent nationwide increase in the price of fuel, and requested an increase in shuttle fares.

The Union listened to their concerns and engaged them constructively. While we acknowledged the difficulties they are facing, the Students Union did not approve the proposed N50 fare increment, considering the financial pressure students are already experiencing.

Earlier today, the association again reached out to the Union after reports that the price of fuel had risen to about N1,400 per litre, requesting approval to charge N200 per seat.

The Students' Union Government maintained its position and appealed to the drivers to please bear with our students, as students cannot continue to carry the burden of circumstances beyond their control.

The Students' Union Government remains committed to protecting the welfare and interests of all students. We will continue to advocate for students and ensure that decisions affecting them are handled with fairness and responsibility.

We therefore appeal to all students to remain calm and patient while discussions continue towards a possible resolution.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
