How to fully format your nokia s60 symbian phone.

It’s true that nokia symbian phone is presently a "past tense" but people like me who still keep symbian phone or those who intend to buy one will surely need this information.

Before we proceed, please note that formatting a symbian phone is different from upgrading a symbian phone, though they are similar in the sense that they both clears the content of the phone.

Precautions: Before you flash your phone, do the following

  1. Make sure that you backup the contents in your phone. You can do that either with the build in backup program of your device or with the program Content Copier of the Nokia PC Suite. For a strong backup procedure, make a backup with both programs before format the device. You can also make a backup using your Memory Card if it’s supported.
  2. Make sure that your device is fully charged before you proceed with formatting the device. If the battery goes down during this procedure, It may result in inconsistent state of your device.
  3. The formatting process often request for your phone's security code which is 12345 or 00000 by default.
  4. You must not interrupt the formatting process.

There are 2 major ways to automatically format a nokia symbian phone (i.e soft format and hard format) and 1 way to format is manually.

Soft format: This is a normal reset. It will load the original settings from the phone's ROM. However, it will retain the user's own data. Like images, music, installed applications etc. To do this simply dial ---- *#7780# ----- on the standby screen. This will completely format your smartphone. The device will reboot and it will be in a state you bought it. Formatting storage memory takes some time.

Hard Format: This is just as easy as the Soft Format method with a different code. Simply type ---- *#7370# ---- and you'll be asked to enter your security code. Your phone will then restart. With the hard reset method your default factory applications will remain on the device, however any third party application you have installed will be completely deleted after the device resets.

Formatting your phone manually:
I don't advice that you format your phone using this method unless your receiving a blank screen, your device freezes often or act out of the normal after the above steps are taken, or you have applied the methods explained above but the problem persist.
Here's a quick step by step flashing guide for your Symbian S60 phone:
  1. Turn off your device
  2. Press the Green Dial Key, Star Key, and the Three key. Hold those keys down while pressing the power button.
  3. Continue to hold down those keys until you see the "Phone is Formatting Screen" of even just the words "Formatting" or something of that nature.
The device is now formatting, make sure you don't turn it off or press any buttons or any other options during this time. Once the device has flashed it will be reset to the exact factory default settings.
